I notice with amusement that Yorkshire have, quite pompously, changed their ODI team name to Yorkshire Carnegie, in the mistaken belief that anyone will actually call them that. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, it doesn’t matter. The marketeers will say that it is raising brand awareness etc etc and perhaps most fans will happily accept these kind of alterations to the club’s DNA if it means their club get more cash to splash on big names but yet…
The traditionalist in me wonders why clubs don’t just return to being called by their club name as in football. Why is the four-day arena sacred to sponsors when the ODI scene, which is primarily aimed at a younger market, is not? Can anyone imagine a young fan referring to their team as Yorkshire Carnegie!?
Naturally, Somerset would relish the funds that sponsors offer but hopefully will avoid the naming rights fuss that means your team might change name every year or two as sponsorship contracts cease.
